The Pie de Palo Range, located in the east-central part of San Juan Province, is a key area for understanding the evolution of the western margin of Gondwana during the Proterozoic and Early Paleozoic. The lithostructural characteristics of the units exposed along its western margin record the complex geological history of the basement of the current Western Sierras Pampeanas. The most significant geological processes involved are the role of the Pie de Palo basement during the assembly of the Rodinia supercontinent, its subsequent break-up, the mechanisms responsible for its emplacement along the western margin of Gondwana, and the later reactivation of these structures during subsequent tectonic events. This field trip offers an exceptional opportunity to examine some of the most representative outcrops along the western edge of the range, where lithostructural evidence supports the main geotectonic models proposed to explain the early evolution of the continental margin, a topic that continues to be the subject of scientific debate.
