Dr. Manu Monge-Ganuzas, Executive Secretary of ProGEO – International Association for the Conservation of Geological Heritage, joins the programme of the XXIII Congreso Geológico Argentino as a plenary speaker.
His lecture, entitled “Geodiversity and Geological Heritage: Knowledge, Conservation and Opportunities for Sustainable Development,” will provide a current overview of geoconservation and its contribution to the understanding, protection and enhancement of geological heritage.
Geodiversity constitutes the physical foundation of landscapes, ecosystems and human societies. Within it, geological heritage comprises those elements of exceptional scientific value that help us interpret the history of the Earth and life.
The lecture will introduce the foundations and principal tools of geoconservation, including the methods used to identify, inventory and assess sites of geological interest, as well as the strategies employed for their conservation and management.
It will also examine the application of this discipline in spatial planning, protected areas, geoparks, the enhancement of mining heritage, geotourism and geological education. Drawing on international experiences, the lecture will explore the opportunities geoconservation creates for research, consultancy, public management, heritage interpretation and scientific cooperation.
In a country characterised by its extensive geological diversity, these tools are particularly relevant to the academic community and to sectors connected with land management and geological and mineral resources.
Dr. Manu Monge-Ganuzas’s participation will bring an international perspective on a growing discipline capable of connecting geological knowledge, land management and sustainable development.
In addition to his plenary lecture, Dr. Manu Monge-Ganuzas will deliver a specialised course, whose content, date and format will be announced soon.
The XXIII Congreso Geológico Argentino will take place from 19 to 23 April 2027 in San Juan, Argentina.
