Teaching geology in the age of AI. Innovations, challenges, and strategies for the future

Convenors:

Esp. María Martha Caballero (UNSJ), Téc. Analía Illanes (UNSJ – UCC)

Geology is at a historic turning point. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into our classrooms and laboratories not only provides unprecedented data-processing capabilities but also compels us to rethink how we convey knowledge about geologic time and processes. The sustained, exponential advancement of AI is redefining the boundaries of scientific inquiry.
This symposium will explore, among other topics, the integration of intelligent tools into Earth Science pedagogy, analyzing how AI can enhance the interpretation of complex systems without undermining the fundamental value of fieldwork and geologic expertise.
The proposal for this forum is conceived as a space for critical reflection on the transformation of geological practice, aiming to identify strengths and weaknesses in current training and to propose new curricular pathways that prepare geoscience professionals to lead the interpretation of geologic events in a digitalized society. Within this context, the symposium will address updating scientific content, incorporating interdisciplinary approaches, and using teaching strategies that connect theory with practice. It will also include current issues such as sustainability, environmental impact, and the responsible use of resources, thereby strengthening students’ preparation for their academic and professional futures.
