Sedimentology and Ichnology in Marine Environments

Instructors: Dr. Juan José Ponce (IIPG-CONICET), Dr. Noelia Carmona (IIPG-CONICET)

Sedimentology is a branch of the Earth Sciences that studies the processes of generation, transport, and deposition of materials that accumulate as sediments in continental and marine environments, and that typically form sedimentary rocks. Since its inception, one of the main objectives of this discipline has been to reconstruct sedimentary environments, producing predictive interpretations of sediment distribution and their evolutionary history. In many successions, the absence of primary sedimentary structures due to bioturbation makes it necessary to apply detailed ichnological analysis in order to interpret the depositional environment. Trace fossils reflect the behavior of organisms in response to the physical and chemical variables of the environment; therefore, ichnological analyses constitute a powerful tool for significantly refining proposed depositional models.
