Technical Sessions

The Technical Sessions of the XXIII Argentine Geological Congress constitute the central academic axis of the meeting and a privileged forum for presenting and discussing the most recent advances in the Earth sciences. Their purpose is to promote the exchange of ideas, scientific advancement, and the dissemination of high-impact research results, strengthening the development of geosciences in Argentina and the region.

Researchers, professionals, and students from the national and international geoscience community are invited to submit original contributions based on fieldwork, laboratory studies, modelling, experimentation, or data analysis. Contributions may address topics related to paleontology, stratigraphy, petrology, geophysics, geochemistry, structural geology, sedimentology, volcanology, geomorphology, mineral resources, energy and water resources, as well as the application of new methodologies and tools such as remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems, and artificial intelligence. Submissions focused on geological hazard management, environmental geology, geoscience education, and public communication of science are also encouraged.

These sessions aim to strengthen interdisciplinary exchange and encourage the integration of multiple approaches that enable a deeper understanding of geological processes and their implications for society, the environment, and sustainable development.

Technical Session 1. Stratigraphy and Sedimentology

Associate Editors: Dr. José Paredes, Dra. Tatiana Soria

This session welcomes papers focused on the characterization, interpretation, and reconstruction of sedimentary environments, stratigraphic sequences, and depositional processes. Contributions are expected to provide new methodological approaches, field data, or conceptual models that enhance the understanding of regional and global geological evolution, integrating sedimentological, stratigraphic, and paleoenvironmental observations.

Technical Session 2. Paleontology, Paleoecology, and Taphonomy

Associate Editor: Dra. Ana Mestre

This session invites papers addressing the study of fossil organisms, their ecological interactions, and the processes influencing their preservation. Contributions are expected to integrate morphological, paleoenvironmental, and taphonomic analyses to reconstruct past ecosystems, interpret evolutionary patterns, and understand the sedimentary and biological contexts that shaped the history of life on Earth.

Technical Session 3. Biostratigraphy

This session welcomes studies focused on the use and application of fossils as tools for the correlation and dating of stratigraphic units. Contributions integrating micropaleontological, paleobotanical, or paleozoological analyses, as well as new methodologies and biostratigraphic approaches that refine time scales, interpret basin evolution, and improve regional and global stratigraphic resolution, are encouraged.

Technical Session 4. Structural Geology and Geodynamics

This session invites papers dedicated to the analysis of geological structures, crustal deformation, and the tectonic evolution of different regions. Studies integrating field observations, structural analyses, geodynamic modeling, and geophysical or geochronological data are expected, aiming to understand the processes controlling the formation of orogens, basins, and faults, as well as the architecture of the Earth’s crust.

Technical Session 5. Environmental Geology

This session welcomes papers focused on the interaction between geological processes and natural and human environments. Contributions addressing the assessment of geological hazards, sustainable resource management, soil and water contamination, and the environmental impacts of geological activity are encouraged, promoting integrated approaches for mitigation, restoration, and adaptation to current environmental changes.

Technical Session 6. Geological Hazard, Geotechnics, and Engineering Geology

Associate Editor: Dr. Pablo Ormeño

This session invites contributions oriented toward the study, evaluation, and mitigation of geodynamic processes that affect infrastructure development and communities. Papers on slope stability, seismicity, soil and rock dynamics, and land-use planning are expected, integrating geological, geotechnical, and engineering approaches to improve safety, resilience, and sustainable development in the face of natural hazards.

Technical Session 7. Earth Science Education and Public Communication of Science

This session welcomes papers focused on the teaching, dissemination, and social appropriation of geological knowledge. Contributions presenting pedagogical innovations, educational resources, communication strategies, and outreach experiences are expected, promoting meaningful learning, scientific literacy, and public engagement with geosciences in various educational and community contexts.

Technical Session 8. Geomorphology and Paleosols

This session brings together research focused on the study of surface processes and landforms, as well as the analysis of paleosols as records of ancient environments. Papers integrating geomorphological, sedimentological, and paleoenvironmental approaches are encouraged, contributing to the reconstruction of surface dynamics and paleoclimatic evolution in diverse geological contexts.

Technical Session 9. Igneous Petrology

This session invites studies on the origin, evolution, and emplacement of igneous rocks in various tectonic settings. Contributions integrating petrological, geochemical, isotopic, and geochronological analyses are expected, aimed at understanding magmatic processes and their relationship to crustal evolution and regional geodynamic systems.

Technical Session 10. Metamorphic Petrology

This session welcomes studies centered on the physical and chemical processes affecting rocks during metamorphism. Papers including petrological, thermobarometric, geochemical, and geochronological analyses are expected, focusing on the interpretation of pressure–temperature conditions, metamorphic paths, and their relation to the tectonic and geodynamic evolution of different regions.

Technical Session 11. Sedimentary Petrology

This session welcomes papers dedicated to the study of the composition, texture, and diagenesis of sedimentary rocks, as well as the interpretation of their depositional and evolutionary environments. Contributions integrating petrographic, geochemical, and mineralogical analyses are expected, aimed at reconstructing sedimentary processes, assessing provenance, and understanding the diagenetic and tectonosedimentary history of different depositional systems.

Technical Session 12. Volcanology

Associate Editor: Dra. Laura Godoy

This session invites contributions on the study of volcanic processes, their products, and their impact in various geological settings. Papers addressing petrological, geochemical, structural, and geophysical aspects are encouraged, as well as research on eruptive dynamics, magmatic system evolution, and volcanic hazard assessment in both modern and ancient contexts.

Technical Session 13. Mineralogy and Geochemistry

This session invites the submission of studies focused on the characterization of minerals and the chemical analysis of rocks and soils. Contributions that advance the understanding of the formation, alteration, and evolution of rock materials, as well as the comprehension of geochemical cycles and their relation to geological and environmental systems, are expected.

Technical Session 14. Mineral Deposits and Resources

This session welcomes papers dedicated to the study of the genesis, evolution, and exploration of metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits. Contributions integrating geological, geochemical, structural, and geophysical approaches are expected, aimed at understanding mineralization processes, tectonic controls, and the economic and sustainable implications of natural resource exploitation.

Technical Session 15. Hydrogeology and Water Resources Geology

This session invites studies on the occurrence, circulation, and quality of surface and groundwater. Papers integrating hydrogeological, geochemical, and geophysical approaches are expected, focusing on aquifer assessment, sustainable resource management, and the impacts of climate change and human activities on hydrological systems.

Technical Session 16. Energy Resources Geology

Associate Editor: Dra. Sofía Pérez Luján

This session welcomes contributions dedicated to the study of geological processes related to the generation, accumulation, and exploitation of both conventional and unconventional energy resources. Papers integrating stratigraphic, structural, geochemical, and geophysical approaches, as well as studies applied to the exploration, evaluation, and sustainable management of these resources in various geological contexts, are expected.

Technical Session 17. Hydrocarbon Exploration and Development

Associate Editor: Dra. Silvia Barredo

This session invites studies focused on the geological, geophysical, and geochemical characterization of petroleum systems, from generation and migration to accumulation and production. Contributions on new exploration methodologies, basin modeling, reservoir analysis, and integrated studies that help optimize the evaluation, development, and sustainable management of hydrocarbon resources in different geological settings are encouraged.

Technical Session 18. Geophysics and Geodesy

Associate Editor: Dr. Mario Giménez

This session welcomes papers applying geophysical methods and paleomagnetic studies to the analysis of the structure, evolution, and dynamics of the Earth’s crust. Contributions on geophysical prospecting, potential field modeling, magnetostratigraphy, tectonic and paleogeographic reconstructions, and studies integrating these approaches to interpret geological processes at different spatial and temporal scales are expected.

Technical Session 19. Remote Sensing and GIS

Associate Editor: Dra. Yanina Esper

This session invites papers employing remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems for territorial analysis, modeling, and management. Contributions applying these tools to geological mapping, resource exploration, environmental monitoring, geomorphological analysis, and risk assessment are expected, highlighting innovative approaches that integrate multiple data sources for geoscientific interpretation.

Technical Session 20. Applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Geology

Associate Editor: Dra. Valentina Flores Aqueveque

This session invites the submission of studies applying artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analysis techniques to geological problems. Contributions demonstrating innovative applications in resource exploration, geological modeling, geophysical interpretation, image analysis, risk prediction, or environmental management are expected, promoting the integration of digital tools in Earth sciences.

Technical Session 21. Geocryology

Associate Editor: Mg. Silvio Pastore

The Geocryology session invites the submission of contributions focused on geological and geomorphological processes associated with cold and periglacial environments. Contributions are expected on permafrost, cryoturbation, cryogenesis, seasonal ice dynamics, cold-region geomorphology, and their environmental implications. Studies integrating field observations, geotechnical analyses, monitoring, modeling, and applications for the assessment of climate change in cryogenic regions will be particularly valued.
